What do we believe in?

What are the core beliefs of the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church?

Like all Christians, our faith and values are based on our shared Christian belief found in the Holy Bible.

As church members, we gather in simple Gospel Halls to pray together on a regular basis and congregate every Sunday to celebrate the Lord’s Supper in small groups.

For those not familiar with Christian teachings and the Bible, the Doctrine of Separation may sound strange. We can understand that.

The Doctrine of Separation reflects the guidance of Scripture to live in a way that honours God.

By following this principle, we seek to distance ourselves from practices and influences that conflict with guidance from the Bible, while remaining fully engaged in family, work, and community life.

Church members make a commitment to only eat and drink with those with whom we celebrate the Lord’s Supper.

Who don’t you eat with other people?

Many religions have specific traditions and practices when it comes to eating and drinking. Some don’t eat certain foods, others don’t eat certain foods together, some will restrict eating and drinking at certain times or on certain days.

Members of the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church make a commitment to eat and drink only with those with whom we would celebrate the Lord’s Supper, also known as Holy Communion.

However, this does not mean we isolate ourselves from the broader community, rather we live and work harmoniously alongside all people across mainstream society. For examples of this, please head to the Our Neighbours section which can be found by clicking here.

Does the church take a conservative or even extreme approach to its faith and values?

We follow the teachings of the Holy Bible, like many other Christian religions. Our members have lived and worked harmoniously around the world for about two centuries. We do not consider it extreme to study and follow the Holy Bible. We take seriously and literally what the Scriptures say, including with respect to humility, modesty, care and compassion.

Do Plymouth Brethren beliefs include the idea that only church members will be saved by God?

That is not correct. Our belief is that if you are a true believer in our Lord Jesus Christ that you will be saved. Being a member of the Plymouth Brethren is not a guarantee of salvation.

Why doesn’t the church display crosses or images of Jesus?

We refer to Matthew 23 v 5-8 in relation to this question.

Plymouth Brethren Christian Church beliefs focus on the moral bearing of the Cross in our hearts and in our lives.

For that reason, we don’t physically represent these symbols on or in our churches.

Do Plymouth Brethren members celebrate Easter, Christmas or birthdays?

Our celebration is the Lord’s Supper, which we host every Sunday in small groups.

We don’t observe holidays but look forward to and appreciate the public holidays that come with them.

Birthdays may be marked with presents or cake. However, they are not marked with a big celebration in the way others might.

How regularly do Plymouth Brethren Christian Church members attend church?

We engage with our community every day in Gospel Halls across the world. Each Sunday, we gather to honour the Lord’s Supper, which is also referred to as Holy Communion.

What is the attitude of members towards medicine?

Church members take medication when required, like anyone else. We also take care of our health and seek medical advice and expertise when required.
